Curlew Shawl

curlew22This is my second shawl to be released in my 2013 six shawl challenge, the colour and texture reminded me of bird feathers which is why I named it Curlew. It is now available to download from ravelry and its free! download now

006Curlew is an extremely easy shawl to knit using just under 300 yards of DK weight yarn. I chose Manos del Uruguay Silk Blend which is a wonderfully soft and pretty yarn.

The shawl is knit from the top down with bands of garter stitch and simple lace stockinette. I am currently a little bit obsessed with garter stitch, its the perfect stitch for using hand-painted and varigated yarns.

  1. I started this morning on a curlew shawl using some cool yarn I dyed with Easter egg dyes.I am now at the first stockinette stitch section and haven’t seen it written as a directive, but should I still be doing the border increase on the right side? And should I read this that the first K2 in row 1 is NOT the selvage edging, but the first two stitches after that and the increase? It’s starting out to be a beauty, at any rate. In the meantime, I will experiment. knitting it without allowing those 2 sts as remnant doesn’t scan right over the central stitch.

    • I FOUND MY ERROR! I was reading it that you just do garter, adding at the selvages every other row, when you meant that you (I) use the “Garter Stitch” instructions below the setup section. Ripped out a bit, but it looks beautiful already. Thank you!

      • Hi, ever so sorry for not getting back to you, for some reason I didn’t get notification of your comments. I do hope that your shawl is going well now, I’d love to see a picture when you’ve finished 🙂
